Founder's View Shiraz

This rich Barossa Shiraz shows aromas of concentrated plum and blackberry, as well as subtle hints of cinnamon and nutmeg spice. Rich, deep flavours of dark berries and plum fruits are supported by cedar and sandalwood for layered complexity and depth of flavour. Currently has fresh fruit plushness, but will age gracefully with careful cellaring.

Grape variety breakdown

Carefully selected parcels of ripe fruit were fermented in small format stainless steel tanks, and then aged in a combination of new and seasoned French and American oak barrels for 12 months, and then blended together to create a Shiraz of balance and opulence.

Background

The founders of Krondorf village farmed small plots, where vines grew among produce, orchards and livestock. In the 1890s, the Glenview winery was founded, which overlooked these little farms. This winery became the engine room of Krondorf wines. Honouring this history, this range of wines is a result of long-term partnerships with exceptional and often multi-generational Barossa growers. We also use parcels of fruit from our Rifle Range Road vineyard, which display vibrance and generosity.

Vineyard Notes

Kalimna is located in the central Barossa Valley and is famous for its old vine Shiraz and distinct wine style. The soils in Kalimna are often rich, red-brown earth and clay, which provide excellent water-holding capacity and contribute to the development of concentrated flavours. The region benefits from a warm climate with plenty of sunshine, which aids in achieving optimal ripeness. Kalimna is known for producing Shiraz with depth and richness, often showcasing dark berry flavours, spice, and a robust structure. The parcels selected from Kalimna are characterised by their depth, complexity, and consistent quality. Stockwell is situated in the northwestern part of the Barossa Valley and is recognized for its diverse soil profiles and warm climate. The soils in Stockwell include a range of red-brown earth and loam, which support healthy vine growth and contribute to the development of rich, full-bodied wines. The climate is warm with ample sunshine, ideal for ripening and achieving depth of flavour. Stockwell produces a variety of red wines, including Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, known for their richness and complexity. The selected parcels from Stockwell are chosen for their ability to impart depth and consistent quality to the final blend.

The growing season for vintage 2022 started dry and continued that way, with the lowest rainfall on record for the Barossa Valley weather station. There was also a combination of weather extremes from frost and cold nights through to hot weather during flowering season, which lead to a combination of smaller bunches and smaller berries during fruit development. A much needed temperature reprieve occurred during harvesting, enabling many vineyards to slowly ripen their grapes, allowing consistent and quality flavour development. Overall, a smaller vintage, with the total Barossa producing a limited fruit yield. However, despite what it lacked in volume, the overall grape quality was exceptional, with standouts in colour and flavour, particularly for Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache.
